The "Your award choice sucked, and I'm gonna' tell you why!" Contest

Contest Results:
First of all, a big thank you goes out to everyone that entered. I'm personally very dissapointed at the extrordinarily low turnout this contest, and might have to rethink the whole "Contest" thing. You can be rest asured that it'll probably be a while before I have another one. Regardless, we did get four good entries, and here they are, starting with the runners-up (Who didn't get a prize, but thanks for entering anyways! Really! Thank you!):

Mognet regular Andrew writes:

I disagree with you saying Gamespot was the best video game site or whatever.

I completely disagree. Gamespot is now going to be GAMESPOT COMPLETE with a price tag on it, copying exactly what IGN is doing. I was faithful to Gamespot until that announcement. It is not only unoriginal but very unappealing. Now they also have pop up ads all over the place and will have a "limited" free site (where limited = absolutely nada). So that is my disagreement.
My favorite video game information website is now Gameforms. Not because of the content but because: A) it's free B) absolutely no intrusive ads even if only it has a "SITE DOWN FOR MAINTENANCE" thingamajig on the site.

So there's my complaint, I don't give a rat's anatomical posterior if you think it's a worthy complaint or not.

Jake sez:
I see two things wrong with this argument. The first is the nit-picky kind. This was a "Best of 2001" thing, and Gamespot Complete didn't exist in 2001, nor did Gameforms. The second part is that neither exist at this moment, and there's really no way to predict how things will turn out. Do I look forward to Gameforms? Yes. Do I know how it'll turn out? No, not really. Sure, I have faith, but I'm not about to go saying it's the best gaming 'site on the net before it even exists.
On the other side of things, I can't be sure what to make of Gamespot's announcement. For starters, the only pop-ups I've seen so far at Gamespot are on their main page, and although it certainly isn't a good thing, it's a far cry from what IGN does. To refresh everyone, IGN has zillions of pop-ups, wait pages, and rollovers, some of which prompt loud, annoying noises. The Gamespot Complete announcement didn't make any mention of advertising.
Their announcement also makes it unclear as to what will change with their regular 'site. It could veryu well be that they'll remove streaming video from their pages. Maybe not. But in either case, I don't think I'll feel the need to judge it until it comes. And if it sucks, well, it won't win my 2002 awards. But as it stands, it had an awesome 2001.

Previous contest winner Kevin Clark writes:

Best non-mognet site [webcomic]

jake- i would have to say that yes rpg world is good but in no way does it compare to KEVIN MEETS CELEBS. http://www.angelfire.com/ego/kevmeetscelebs

my website in which i superimpose my face on people meeting celebs. its good for a laugh and it kicks the ass of any website out there, except of course for mognet, which rules the world.

Tim- same as above KEVIN MEETS CELEBS

Jake sez:

Oooooooh... I was sooooo tempted to pick Kevin Clark's choice here and have him win two contests in a row. I mean, lookit how he scmoozes up for us here. "Except of course for mognet, which rules the world." He even has a link to our 'site on our page! His page itself is purty funny, too, but there's one thing that would hold me back from giving it "Best Webcomic" award- it's not a webcomic. Even if he'd opted to argue it into the "Best new website" category, I'd still feel obligated to put Audiogalaxy on top of it because, well... Audiogalaxy is fuggin' awesome. In any case, sorry ya' didn't win. But hey, I gave you a couple gratuity links to your website as a consolation prize!

And now... The winners...

I'm going to disagree with your choices for Best Anime Release on DVD. My choice would be Ah My Goddess! The Movie. It's got a good story, great character designs, and beautiful animation. The story manages, in my opinion, to stay true to the AMG! manga. While most manga-based anime don't always keep the feel, in my experience, something that can do that is nice. And it comes with a mini shitajiki, for cryin' out loud. And it looks good! And the Adventures of the Mini-Goddess episode was nice.

Jake sez:
I honesttly haven't seen anything AMG!, but I've heard it's good, so I can't really argue with you here. I know, it's more of a "Maybe you're right" than a "You're right", but it beats a "You're wrong."

Gaib Riviere writes:

Oh my dear friend jake. You are misguided into your thinking for best video game hero/heroine. Though Dante was indeed a bad ass and gave me very many enjoyable moments watching him twirl his swords and guns blowing away things in demon form he was fallible. I suppose one would be if they were only half demon.
There is another man who executed such violence with such style that he showed no emotion through it all. propose that the guy from gta3 was the hero of the year for the simple reason of when you drove a large truck through the underground tunnel and switched to side view you could see his face as he ran over cars and trucks smashing and bashing without mercy and never wavering an inch. A static character one might say.
But no, he was truly the epitome of a sociopath. Never speaking, never flinching, and never unwavering in the face of extreme carnage. If that reason is not enough then i propose thus. The man could take drugs. And for once taking drugs in this game actually had an effect. it allowed him to kill with maximum gore watching blood spurt in slow motion. So far we have a drug addicted sociopath with a penchant for carnage. If that is not reason enough I admit exhibit three to the court.
Compared to Dante he had way more attacks. Using a variety of vehicles and weapons. He would knock a man out and run away then as people gather to help him he would blow them all up with the rocket launcher and as the ambulance arrived would then kill the rescue workers. Truly a man who could cause so much carnage that the national guard would be called out is worthy of an award. In conclusion what better choice and role model for the youth of today than a drug addicted sociopath that can take out an entire city without flinching or second guessing himself.
Never let emotion get in the way and he got the job done always, despite the employer, even if the employer had been having sex with a corpse. That is dedication to your duty my friends. And that is to be admired. He is my video game hero of the year, and i hope he is yours too. It may just make him smile. Thank you. Goodnight.

Jake sez:
I half-agree with you here. I think that alot of the stuff you can do in GTA3 is really cool, but I don't really attribute that to it's title character. I mean, that's just like saying whoever drives the car in Gran Turismo is the best hero because he drives really good. And to go a little more in depth as to why I picked Dante, it's not JUST because he's bad ass. It's because he's bad ass with STYLE. No one else better exudes the sheer awesomeness of all the best gunfights in anime and movies combined with all the best swordfights in anime and movies.

Both chose the same prize package, but the two have worked out a strange deal where they split the two packages- Giab gets Dark Forces, Jedi Knight, and the gamepad, and William gets Serious Sam, X-Wing, and Tie Fighter. Thanks to everyone that entered, and to William and Giab, I'll be mailing out your prizes shortly.

Contest Rules:
To enter, read Mognet's choices for the "Best of 2001" awards here, here, and here, and choose one award that you disagree with.

Two entries per person - one each for Tim and myself. All entries must be recieved by midnight PST on Friday, April 26, and the contest winner will be announced on Monday, April 29.

The winners will be chosen between Tim and I, based on the strength of the argument made. Two winners will be chosen- one for each of us. And between the two of us, we'll decide who of the two had a better argument, and give that person first pick of the two prize packages, unless both want different prize packages in which case, hey! Ev'rybody's happy!

The contest winners will recieve one of two prize packages. In any case, I reserve the right to share your entries with the group (And most likely, I will), so don't do anything that will make your mother disown you. On the other hand, I reserve the right to NOT share your entry with the group, so if you do something damn boring, don't whine to me when I don't publicize it.

In any case, get goin', and... uhhh... have fun!
